Analysis · Verified against Amazon Seller Central, 27 August 2026
Amazon’s automated intake measures your product. When it gets the number
wrong, nothing tells you — the fee simply changes, and you have ninety days to notice.
What this is. A modelled walkthrough on an invented SKU. The fee bands, claim
windows and remeasurement conditions are Amazon’s published figures, so the method transfers
directly to your own catalogue.
The setup
A soft-goods product — a folded fabric organiser — shipped in a polybag. Measured packed, it is
17.5 × 13 × 1.8 inches at 1.1 lb.
Against Amazon’s 2026 Large standard limits (18 × 14 × 8 inches, up to 20 lb), it fits
comfortably.
What the Fee Preview report says
Pull the report and read five columns: longest-side, median-side,
shortest-side, item-weight and product-size-tier.
| Field | Your measurement | Amazon’s record |
|---|---|---|
| longest-side | 17.5 in | 17.6 in |
| median-side | 13.0 in | 13.2 in |
| shortest-side | 1.8 in | 2.4 in |
| item-weight | 1.1 lb | 1.1 lb |
| product-size-tier | Large standard | Large standard |
The tier still reads correctly, so a quick scan passes it. The depth is wrong by six-tenths of an
inch — a loose polybag registering thicker than the folded product actually is.
Why 0.6 inches matters
Because Amazon bills on shipping weight, which is the greater of unit weight and
dimensional weight.
Your dimensions: 17.5 × 13 × 1.8 ÷ 139 = 2.95 lb
Amazon’s record: 17.6 × 13.2 × 2.4 ÷ 139 = 4.01 lb
Unit weight is 1.1 lb, so dimensional weight governs either way. But those two figures land
in different fee bands.
| Your dimensions | Amazon’s record | |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensional weight | 2.95 lb | 4.01 lb |
| Band | 2.75–3 lb | 3–20 lb |
| Base rate | $5.85 | $6.15 |
| Increments above 3 lb | — | 4 × $0.08 = $0.32 |
| Fulfilment fee | $5.85 | $6.47 |
$0.62 per unit. On 1,800 units a quarter, that’s
$1,116 — from six-tenths of an inch nobody would spot by eye.
The condition that decides whether you get it back
Amazon’s policy: “Amazon will reimburse the FBA fees if we confirm that they were charged
using inaccurate weight or dimensions.”
And the constraint that governs everything: “you must submit your request within 90
days of the date on which the fee was charged.”
Ninety days from the charge, not from when you noticed. An annual audit finds twelve months of
this and can claim three.
The sequence
1. Remeasurement request — stops it going forward
Search “remeasure” in Seller Central help and use the Remeasure FBA products
and confirm fees widget. Amazon measures a sellable unit in a fulfilment centre and needs ten
days. Once confirmed, the corrected dimensions apply across every store in the region.
Two conditions catch people out. The product must have available units in stock —
you cannot get an out-of-stock SKU remeasured — and it must not have been remeasured twice in the
past 60 days.
2. Historical claim — recovers what you’ve already paid
Help → Contact Us → Shipping & FBA → FBA Issue → “Fees Charged in Error.”
Supply the fee type, ASIN and FNSKU, the charge date, shipment IDs, and photographs of the unit
beside a tape measure and a scale.
One claim per fee charge. Amazon’s wording: “Additional claims for the same
fee charge will be declined.” There is no second attempt, so the evidence needs to be right
first time.
3. Fix the cause
A tighter polybag, or a different fold. If the packing generated the error, remeasurement corrects
the record and the next intake recreates it.
Why this matters more in 2026
Amazon’s bulky packaging fee, introduced 15 January 2026, is priced on dimensional weight
in five-pound bands — $1.51 at 0–5 lb rising to $4.04 above 45 lb.
On a bulky SKU, a measurement error crossing a band boundary now adds a fixed per-unit fee on top
of the fulfilment fee it was already inflating. The same six-tenths of an inch can cost several
times what it did last year.
Run it on your own catalogue
About an hour a month, once the baseline exists:
- Measure every SKU packed, as it ships. Once.
- Pull the Fee Preview report monthly, on the same date.
- Flag only discrepancies crossing a tier or weight band — Amazon limits remeasurement requests
per month and asks you not to spend them on rounding errors. - File remeasurements while stock is on hand.
- File fee-error claims inside 90 days.
Most of the catalogue will be fine. Finding the three SKUs that aren’t, before the window closes,
is what the hour buys.
We do this monthly, across whole catalogues
Fee reconciliation is one component of our forensic audit. We build the measured baseline, run the
comparison, and file both the remeasurement and the historical claim inside the window.
