Rebuilding a 109-Character Amazon Title in 75

Analysis · Verified against Amazon Seller Central, 27 August 2026

On 27 July 2026 Amazon cut product titles to 75 characters. If you did
nothing, Amazon has been rewriting yours — and its AI doesn’t know which of your keywords holds
organic position.

What this is. A worked rebuild on an invented listing, using the character
recovery order we apply across catalogues. The rule, the field limits and the enforcement process are
Amazon’s published figures.

The rule, precisely

  • 75 characters including spaces, all categories except Media, effective 27 July
2026. Brand name counts toward it.
  • Item Highlights, a new field holding up to 125 additional
    characters
, indexed for search and displayed next to the title since 10 August 2026.
  • Amazon has confirmed both fields are inputs for search and that neither is prioritised
    over the other
    .
  • Non-compliant titles are rewritten by Amazon’s AI, gradually, built from the
listing’s existing content. Brand Registry sellers get 14 days to review; without
    action, Amazon’s version goes live.
  • The January 2025 rules still apply: no word more than twice, excluding articles, prepositions and
    conjunctions — and plurals count.

One line deserves more attention than it gets: sellers remain responsible for their
listings even when the content was AI-generated.
If Amazon’s rewrite introduces a violation
and the listing is suppressed, that’s your problem.

The listing

Before, 109 characters:

Premium Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle Keeps Drinks Cold 24 Hours Hot 12 Hours BPA-Free Leak-Proof Lid

Step one: the free characters

Four passes that cost nothing. In our experience these recover 10 to 15 characters before a single
keyword decision is made.

  1. Numerals instead of words. “Twenty-Four Ounce” → “24 oz”
  2. Abbreviate units. oz, ml, cm, kg, in
  3. Delete adjectives with no search volume. “Premium”, “Ultimate”, “Professional
Grade” — check each in Search Query Performance first, because occasionally one does have real volume
    in your category
  4. Remove second and third uses of a repeated word. You’re breaching the 2025 rule
    anyway

Step two: the decision that actually matters

Whatever survives those four passes has to be ranked by your own data, and this is
where most of the damage from this change will happen.

A title-shortening tool can only work from the words in front of it. It doesn’t know that
“insulated” is the term you rank fourth for and that it drives a third of your organic sessions. Cut
it, and traffic bleeds away over six weeks while you assume it’s seasonality.

Three sources, in order:

  • Search Query Performance (Brand Analytics) — impressions, clicks and purchases by
query for your ASIN. The closest thing to ground truth Amazon gives you on which terms
    convert rather than merely appear.
  • Search term reports — which terms convert when you pay for them.
  • Rank tracking — anything where you hold a top-10 position is load-bearing.
Removing it from the title is a decision, not housekeeping.

The rebuild

Title, 54 characters:

Premium Stainless Steel Water Bottle, BPA-Free, 24 oz

Item Highlights, 75 characters:

Keeps drinks cold 24 hours, hot 12 hours. Leak-proof lid. Dishwasher safe.

What survives in the title: brand, core product noun, the single most important differentiator, and
the variant attribute a shopper needs to pick correctly. That’s it. The title’s job is identity and
the click — particularly on mobile, where a chunk of any 200-character title stopped being visible
years ago.

One sequencing trap: Item Highlights stays hidden until your title complies. You
cannot fill the second field first and trim the title later.

What goes in Item Highlights, and what doesn’t

Materials, certifications, use cases, compatibility, pack size — written as readable
phrases
. Paste in a comma-separated string of every term you cut and you’ve built a second
word salad, handing Amazon’s parser something harder to read than the sentence you could have
written.

Three claims about Item Highlights that Amazon has never made

  • “It carries X% of the title’s ranking weight.” Amazon has never published a
ranking weight for any listing field. Anyone quoting a figure has estimated it and dropped the
    caveat.
  • “75 + 125 = 200, so nothing is lost.” Amazon confirmed both fields feed search
and neither is prioritised. That is not the same statement as “a keyword performs identically in
    either position.”
  • “It outranks bullets and backend search terms.” Undocumented.

How to know if the rebuild cost you

Re-baseline the day you edit, then give it four weeks. Record organic rank for your top ten terms,
sessions, and unit session percentage on the day the new title goes live. Check at 14 and 28 days.

  • Sessions fall, conversion holds → you’ve lost visibility on a term. Look first at
    what you moved or cut.
  • Conversion falls, sessions hold → the title’s clarity is the problem, not its
indexing. You’ve cut something a shopper needed to click with confidence.

Amazon’s position is that “your search and discoverability are unchanged.” That may hold in
aggregate. It isn’t a promise about your ASIN, and Seller Central won’t alert you if a product slides
from position three to fourteen.
